Emphasizing vocabulary, parts of speech and essay structure, this class is designed to build the foundation
required to create strong writers.

Literature 7
Literary works of fiction, nonfiction and drama (e.g. Poe, Stevenson, Orne Jewett, Frank, Hansberry) and
poetry (e.g. Frost, Hughes) are read and analyzed.

Grammar & Composition 8
This class builds on Grammar & Composition 7 further emphasizing the elements of writing to reinforce
strong writing skills in both expository and creative writing.

Sandburg, Shelley and Browning (Poetry) and Hemingway, O’Henry, Orwell, Poe and Crane (Literature) are
representative authors of this class which builds on Literature 7’s foundation of literary analysis and critical
thinking skills.

Beginning Speech
Beginning Speech will introduce students to the various facets of both interpersonal communication and
public speaking. Emphasis will be on becoming comfortable speaking in front of an audience, the art of
good listening, memorization and voice inflection.

Classic Graphic Novels
This course will provide opportunity for students to explore the classics through the genre of the graphic
novel. The goal of the course is for students to develop a love of reading, appreciation of the classics and
an understanding of the graphic novel.

The Life and Times of Shakespeare
This course will introduce students to the wonderful world of William Shakespeare. Students will learn about
the time in which Shakespeare lived (including style of dress and cultural and political aspects) and how his
works have impacted their own lives. Emphasis will be on the language of Shakespeare and getting
students comfortable with his style of writing. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in
dramatic scenes and learn what it feels like to become a “Shakespearean Player.”

Science Fiction
Though Science Fiction is a relatively new genre of literature, there are many interesting, exciting and
innovative stories, movies and television programs that deal with the subject. Science Fiction deals mostly
with the future and technology and how that technology has sometimes changed the way we live, think and
feel. This class will focus on the concepts of future and change. Through short stories and audio/visual aids,
students will be encouraged to think about your own future and the effects of change upon your lives.
