Algebra I
Algebra I provides a foundation in the basic concepts and skills of algebra. Students will be introduced to geometry through the study
of angles, polygons, circles and geometric proofs.
Grade: 9-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Placement test
Geometry
Geometry includes all topics in a high school geometry course, including perspective, space, and dimension associated with practical
and axiomatic geometry. Students learn how to apply and calculate measurements of lengths, heights, circumferences, areas, and
volumes. Geometry introduces trigonometry and allows students to work with transformations. Students will use logic to create proofs
and constructions and will work with key geometry theorems and proofs.
Grade: 9-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Algebra I or placement test
Algebra II
Algebra II includes a review of introductory algebra and builds upon that foundation. Topics include: quadratic, rational, radical,
exponential, and logarithmic functions and equations; graphs of quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; equations quadratic
in form; operations on rational expressions, radical expressions, and complex numbers; rational exponents; applications.
Grade: 9-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Geometry or placement test
Algebra II/Geometry (H)
Students will learn such topics as scientific notation, conic sections, roots of quadratic equations, including complex roots, geometric
proofs, inequalities and systems of inequalities, algebra of polynomials, algebraic word problems, gas law, and set theory.
Grade: 9-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Algebra I or placement test
Trigonometry (H)
Students will continue to expand on topics learned in Algebra II as well as to learn such topics as permutations and combinations,
rectangular and polar representation of complex numbers, inverse trigonometric functions, graphs of sinusoids, the binomial theorem,
and the rational roots theorem.
Grade: 10-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Algebra II or Algebra II/Geometry or placement test
Pre-Calculus (H)
Advanced topics from algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and mathematical analysis are interwoven to provide a firm foundation for
calculus. Topics include DeMoivre’s theorem, convergent geometric series, binomial theorem, and rational roots theorem.
Grade: 11-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Trigonometry or placement test
Calculus AB (AP)
Students will cover all topics in Advanced Placement Calculus AB syllabi. Instruction includes review of functions, review of
trigonometry, limits, graphing calculators, derivates, and integrals. This course prepares students for the Advanced Placement
exam.
Grade: 11-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus
Calculus BC (AP)
This course is for students who took and passed Trigonometry during their Freshmen year at the Prep. Students will cover all topics in
Advanced Placement Calculus BC syllabi. Instruction includes optimization problems, integration, polar and inverse functions, motion
analysis, applications of integrals, solids of revolution, L’Hopital’s rule, logarithmic isolation, parametric functions, Newton’s method,
trapezoidal rule, series, tests of convergence, slope fields, Euler’s method, logistic growth, and arc length. This course prepares
students for the Advanced Placement exam.
Grade: 11-12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Calculus AB
College Mathematics (Fall)
This course is a one-semester course to prepare students to take the standard math placement exam that they must take when they go
to college. By passing such tests, students demonstrate that they are prepared to enroll in college level math courses. Success on
such exams requires mastery of the core topics of beginning and intermediate algebra. Topics include linear, quadratic, rational,
exponential, and logarithmic functions and equations; graphs of linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; equations that
are quadratic in form; operations on rational expressions, radical expressions, and complex numbers; rational exponents; applications.
Grade: 12 (elective)
Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: Must be a Senior
College Mathematics (Spring)
The Spring semester of College Mathematics is designed for students who want to brush up on their Algebra skills in preparation for
their college math class. Topics include linear, quadratic, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and equations; graphs of
linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; equations that are quadratic in form; operations on rational expressions,
radical expressions, and complex numbers; rational exponents; applications.
Grade: 12 (elective)
Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: Must be a Senior
High School Math Course Descriptions
|
Math classes are determined by ability not grade. Prior to enrollment, each new student will take a math placement test. Although a student's placement test score will determine their math class, teachers monitor student progress at the beginning of the semester to ensure that math placement test scores accurately reflect student ability. Students whose math placement test scores are below the skills necessary for Algebra I must pass the course during summer school. Students enrolling mid-year whose math placement test scores are below the skills necessary for Algebra I will have the class twice a day (instead of an elective) until their grade consistently reflects a "C" or higher. After school math tutoring is mandatory for students receiving "D" and "F's."
|
At the conclusion of their Junior year, students will take a College Math Placement Test. This practice test will enable students to identify their mathematic strengths and weaknesses as they prepare for the college math placement test and eventual college math course. North Pointe also offers a College Mathematics elective for Seniors. The Fall semester of College Mathematics will prepare students to take their College's actual test in the Spring. The Spring semester of College Mathematics is designed for students who want to brush up on their Algebra skills in preparation for their college math class.
