Preliminary SAT
October 17, 2012
The PSAT/NMSQT test will be administered to all North Pointe Sophomores and interested Juniors on
Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Unlike the SAT test, the PSAT/NMSQT is only given once a year and
measures critical thinking skills that are important for success in college. The test, which includes critical
reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills, is an important first step in the college admissions
process. It enables students to get feedback about critical academic skills, seek information from colleges,
enter scholarship competitions, prepare for the SAT Reasoning Test and initiate the college-planning
process. Sophomores take the test to help prepare them for taking the SAT test their Junior and Senior
years. Taking the SAT test in their Junior year, allows an opportunity for scholarships as well as more
practice for the SAT. The scores of Juniors are entered into the National Merit Scholarship program. In
addition, many companies that give financial aid to children of employees use the PSAT scores as one of
the factors in determining the aid given to students.

State Testing - Fall 2012

State standards. Students register in August during their English and Math classes.

Thursday, October 25th - AIMS High School Math

SAT's
May 4, 2013 and June 1, 2013
The SAT is a globally recognized college admission test that lets students show colleges what they know
and how well they can apply that knowledge. It tests knowledge of reading, writing and math — subjects
that are taught every day at the Prep. Most students take the SAT during their Junior or Senior year of High
School, and almost all colleges and universities use the SAT to make admission decisions. Taking the SAT
is the first step in finding the right college — the place where you can further develop your skills and pursue
your passions. But SAT scores are just one of many factors that colleges consider when making their
admission decisions. High School grades are also very important. In fact, the combination of high school
grades and SAT scores is the best predictor of academic success in college. Most students take the SAT
during their Junior or Senior year in High School. At least half of all students take the SAT twice - in the
Spring of their Junior year and in the Fall of their Senior year. Most students also improve their score the
second time around.

Subject Pathways/Course Catalogs
For the second year in a row, US News and World Report has ranked
North Pointe as one of the Best High Schools in America and #4
among all Phoenix public high schools. The Prep came in at #13 for
all valley high schools and #22 out of the 514 high schools in the
state. North Pointe was also ranked as the top charter high school in
the Northwest Valley. Unlike the State's school ranking, which is
based upon a bell curve (only a certain number of schools can be an
'A', 'B', etc) and primarily reflects Sophomore AIMS scores (10
classes out of over 130 offered at the Prep each day) and a
complicated, questionable growth score, the US News & World
Report rankings are based on AIMS Reading and Math scores as
well as Advanced Placement (AP) college readiness testing (which
includes freshmen-seniors in all core subjects).
