Students excel in AP Physics
The College Board recently released the scores for the 2010
Advanced Placement exams and the Prep's emphasis to academic
excellence has shown through once again.
For the second year in a row, Prep students taking the AP Physics B
Exam performed very well. The national percentage of students
receiving a passing score (defined as a "3" or above) in 2010 was
58%. In 2009, 67% of all Prep students taking the exam passed it, and
in 2010 an impressive 82% of Prep AP Physics students posted scores
of 3 or higher, well above the national average.
"Our results are especially impressive because almost twice as many
Prep students took the exam in 2010 as did in 2009," said Nick
Leonardi, the Prep's AP Physics teacher. "Looking ahead to 2011, the
number of students enrolled in the course this year has more than
doubled from the 2010 numbers. In fact, the course has become so
popular that we had to add another AP science course, AP Biology,
due to increased demand."
The Prep also offers sections of AP English: Language, AP English:
Literature, AP Spanish, and AP Calculus. AP Social Studies courses
are scheduled to be phased in during the 2011-2012 school year
during the final phase of the curriculum realignment.
A score of 3-5 is needed to earn College credit on the AP Physics B
test. Twenty-seven percent of Prep students received a 4 or 5 and
earned 8 college physics credits. Fifty-five percent received a 3
earning them 4 college physics credits.
