This fall, North Pointe enters the final phase of a three-year curriculum redevelopment plan expanding academic opportunities for our students. “One
of our primary goals was to increase our Honors, AP and Dual Enrollment opportunities while maintaining regular course offerings,” said the Prep’s
Principal, Richard Gow. “We also wanted to provide four years of High School coursework in each of the core subject areas though the State may
require fewer. We believe our curriculum improvements continue to set the Prep apart as one of the elite College Prep schools in the Phoenix area.”
Beginning this Fall, 14 of the 16 High School core credits will be offered as regular courses. Additionally, students may
choose to take 12 of the 16 core courses at the Honors or Advanced Placement (AP) level. “It’s virtually unheard of for a school our size to offer
comprehensive academic programs at both the regular and accelerated pace,” continued Principal Gow, “It allows students the choice to pursue
Honors or AP in one or more core subject areas and still progress at a regular pace in other areas.”
English
Juniors and Seniors may now choose to take English courses for either regular or AP credit. Seniors may still take English 101 and 102 for college
credit as a Prep elective course, utilizing the computer lab.
Mathematics
1) Pre-Calculus has been added to the Prep’s dual enrollment (Prep and college credit) opportunities.
2) Beginning with the Class of 2013 (next year’s Sophomores) the State is requiring four years of math with Algebra I being the lowest course allowed
for credit. In the past, the Prep encouraged math students to work at their level of ability and progress from there. However, since the State is now
requiring all Freshmen to complete Algebra I (so all 8th graders must complete at least Pre-Algebra) this can no longer be the case. To assist
students, North Pointe is offering free tutoring this summer and free after-school tutoring this upcoming school year. Additionally, students who fall
below a “C” in their math class will be pulled from an elective to take a supplementary math class each day until their grade improves.
Science
AP Biology has been added, joining last year’s successful additions of Chem/Physics and AP Physics.
Social Studies
1) Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may now take Social Studies courses for regular or AP credit.
2) Geography has been added as a graduation requirement at the Prep beginning with this Fall’s Freshmen class. The change moves World History to
the Sophomore year (aligning it with Sophomore English course World Literature and Composition) and US History to Junior year (aligning it with Junior
English course American Literature and Composition or AP English Language and Composition).
