The following is a factual response to Channel 3’s claims:
Channel 3’s statement:
A charter school was fined 2 years ago for having asbestos. Yet today, it’s still there.
Fact:
North Pointe Preparatory has never been fined for having asbestos. Two years ago it was fined for failing to have a complete management plan
when the EPA visited the campus. Although the school was in the process of completing the plan before the EPA visit, the plan had not been
completed. It was completed soon after and has been in place ever since.
Channel 3's statement:
Some parents are still a little concerned about this.
Fact:
No one was concerned until the reporter showed up on campus and asked inflammatory and misleading questions. The following day, the school
did not receive a single phone call voicing concern.
Channel 3’s statement:
Two years ago the US Environmental Protection Agency discovered asbestos at North Pointe Prep. The agency also discovered the school did
not have a mandatory management plan that deals with asbestos and the school was fined.
Fact:
Pointe Schools hired a certified company to perform a Comprehensive AHERA- Compliant Asbestos Inspection. This inspection identified 3
instances of non-friable asbestos containing materials at North Pointe Preparatory. Because this plan was not complete when the EPA visited the
school, Pointe Schools was fined. The cost of the inspection $23,000 was applied to the $13,700 fine and the school paid no money to the EPA.
Channel 3’s statement:
Since then, the plan has been created, but the asbestos still exists.
Fact:
It is not a State or Federal offense to have asbestos on a school campus. According to the EPA; ASU, NAU UofA and most commercial buildings in
the downtown Phoenix area built prior to 1985 have asbestos. The issue is a management plan. The Prep has that in place.
Channel 3’s statement:
I went to the principal’s office to find out why this problem wasn’t fixed but I was quickly kicked off campus when the topic was brought up.
Fact:
The reporter and the cameraman were asked to leave campus because they were filming on campus without permission.
Channel 3’s statement:
So, I went above him to the Superintendent’s office.
Fact:
Prior to the reporter and cameraman being asked to leave school property, an interview had already been requested by Pointe Schools
Superintendent Johnson. The reporter had no intension of talking to the Principal and was only trying to capture the dramatic "being kicked off
campus shot" for the dwindling Channel 3 audience.
