“I am naturally very pleased with how we ended the State tournament,“ continued Coach Ward. “For the second year in a row we end the year as the
2nd best 2A team in the entire state. More than just the team effort given after a grueling year of focus and study, however, is the fact that North Pointe
has a State Champion for Academic Decathlon.”

The topic of general study for the 2009-2010 season was “The French Revolution” and involved 10 different categories of competition including:
Speech; Interview; Essay; Language and Literature; Economics; Math; Science; Super Quiz; Music; Art. Next year’s topic has already been announced
and it will be “The Great Depression” with the novel of study being John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Coach Ward is already making strategic
plans for study and will begin teaching the novel after students return from Spring Break. Congratulations and good luck next year North Pointe Prep
Academic Decathlon Team!
The Prep's Junior Katie Komos won the Academic Decathlon State Championship for best overall
speech among all 1A-5A students in the State. She also won a gold medal in the Honors category.
This is Katie's second State Title. Last year, she won a State Championship in the dramatic
category at the Speech State Tournament.

“Along with the prestige this award brings to Katie, the Acadeca Team and our school,” said Coach
Troy Ward, “is the fact that Katie Komos was the only student in the State who got to present
anything at the awards ceremony at the end of the competition. Her speech was riveting as she held
the attention of over a thousand people watching. I can only imagine the feeling of having a
gymnasium packed with 1000 people giving you a standing ovation as you hold in your hands one
of the most coveted trophies in the State.”

In an amazing showing at the State competition, North Pointe's Academic Decathlon Team recorded
their highest State competitive score yet. The team moved up in their state ranking from last year’s
31st spot to 26th among all 1A-5A schools in Arizona. The team finished with six (out of the nine)
team members finishing in the top 10 out of the 360 students in the Speech category of competition.
Another highlight from the State competition was the Prep earning an overall 8th place in the Math
category and also some of the highest scores of the State competition in the Interview category.
Annika Vannan earned the 5th highest ranked essay overall and a medal for highest scoring
student from the North Pointe Acadeca Team.
