In an incredible upset, the North Pointe Prep Academic Decathlon Team placed third
overall in their Regional Competition and advanced automatically to the upcoming
State competition. Earning an amazing 36 individual medals and 18 team medals, the
Prep's AcaDeca team was a dominant force at the competition. Perhaps the most
impressive feats were Annika Vannan earning the coveted best overall essay and
Katie Komos winning best overall speech. Each was given the privilege of reading the
essay and performing the speech in front of a crowd of over 500 people during the
awards ceremony and then collecting trophies each for both of these. Additionally, for
the second consecutive year, the team took a 2nd place trophy for the Super Quiz
Relay portion of the competition and another trophy for 3rd place overall for the entire
Super Quiz category in which written test scores are combined with the relay scores.

The team easily took the third overall spot at the competition with 16 1A through 5A
teams competing earning 33,860 points cumulatively placing just behind the St. Johns
team who have been the 1st place Region I winners for the past 20 years in a row. This
leaves the North Pointe team as the Number 2 ranked 2A team in the state of Arizona
with their highest points earned to date as they advance to the State level of
competition being held at Sandra Day O’Connor High School on March 12th & 13th.

“The true upset of this academic competition was the St. Johns team finally being
dethroned from their 1st place overall spot for the first time in 20 years,” said Head
Coach Troy Ward, “and it was North Pointe Prep that contributed to their downfall.”

competition with North Pointe’s incredible showing helping them to defeat St. Johns. “The irony,” continued Coach Ward, “is that I was a competitor in
high school on the St. Johns team 20 years ago and ultimately helped them to start their legacy. It’s a strange feeling to not only compete against them
with my own team every year but to finally beat them in so many categories. Also important is that by securing one of the top spots at Regionals we
automatically advance to State. Normally we have to wait a couple of weeks to see if we’ve qualified with enough points. This year the Prep's AcaDeca
team has ensured that we are indeed one of the strongest teams in all of Arizona.”

In addition to the status and trophies earned, the North Pointe Academic Decathlon team earned nearly $4,000 in scholarship money. This year’s topic
