The first forensics 1A-5A tournament of the year was held at Glendale Community College and the Prep's Speech
team was ready with 13 entries ranging from Serious Prose to Humorous Interpretation. Other categories the team
competed in included Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, and Poetry.
Throughout the day the team worked hard as the preliminary rounds were at last complete. Normally these first
rounds would be followed by a semi-final round and then a finals round in which the top six people from the entire
tournament compete. However, this tournament was not governed by the Forensic League of Arizona rules and
officials decided to cut the semi-final round and go straight to finals.
Unfortunately, no members of the NPP Speech Team broke into finals. But, the team members were able to observe
the finals round and soon realized what it takes to make it to that level in the competition. Rather than getting
discouraged, the team played some volleyball and talked about everything learned that day and became determined
to work hard to make it to finals in the next tournament.
Coach Ward was pleased with the team despite not breaking into finals and gave the team some words of
encouragement at the end of the day, “Well, no team starts at the top…and we wouldn’t want to because there’s
nothing to aspire to if you start off as the best. The only way you become the best is trial and error”.
