North Pointe physics classes boarded motor coaches at 1 AM and
began a 26 hour adventure to Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia,
CA . After spending much of the 7 hour bus ride out there talking
excitedly about things to come, the coaches stopped just outside the
park for breakfast, followed by a 10 AM arrival and opening as the
students split into their groups and got to work!
The March 11th is the official Physics Day at the park, and students
from schools all around Southern California attend, along with a
healthy presence from Phoenix-area schools like the Prep. Students
were able to use their knowledge of energy and some right triangle
trigonometry to calculate the heights and velocities of such terrifying
coasters as Batman and the Ninja. They also tapped into their lessons
on rotational motion and centripetal acceleration when studying some of the tamer rides like the Scrambler and the
Grand Carousel.
Some students even braved long lines in order to ride two of the newest coasters at the park, Tatsu and the X.
The weather was perfect and the water rides were also popular to cool off from the mid-day sun. By 7:00 pm
everybody was exhausted (especially the chaperons!). Dinner was grabbed outside the park, and the buses were
much quieter on the ride home as all slept soundly on the way home.
